Waiohiki (Redclyffe) Bridge sustained major damage during Cyclone Gabrielle and its central spans collapsed. A temporary staging bridge was installed in August 2023 to restore access while we worked on a long-term, resilient solution with our partners at Hastings District Council.

Investigations have been completed for a new permanent bridge, expected to be 220–240m long.

Key factors considered included:

  • Bridge alignment and land requirements
  • Flood management and river behaviour
  • Road safety improvements through Waiohiki village
  • Upgrades to nearby intersections (Links Road and Springfield Road)
  • Environmental and geotechnical conditions.

Of the six design options considered, Option 2C alignment (viewed in the flyover below) was confirmed in December 2025. It offers the strongest overall benefits with a new bridge immediately upstream of the existing crossing, skewed slightly from the current alignment. A collaborative approach with mana whenua is guiding how cultural values and Te Aranga Design Principles can be incorporated into the design.

Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027, subject to final approvals and funding.
