The stormwater pump station beside the Pūrimu Stream near the Ahuriri Estuary has been protecting nearby land, homes and streets from flooding for more than 50 years. Visible from State Highway 2 and sitting alongside the popular Hawke’s Bay Trails cycleway, it is a small but important part of Napier's stormwater network.

The existing roof has been leaking for some time and repairs have not been able to fix the problem permanently. To ensure the pump station operates reliably, especially during heavy rain, the roof will be replaced with a more durable, low-maintenance design.

What's changing?

The current roof has a concave shape that has contributed to ongoing drainage and leak issues. The new roof will have a flat profile, improving drainage and making it easier and cheaper to maintain.

What to expect during construction?

Construction begins mid-May 2026 and will take around six weeks to complete. Those travelling on SH2, or riding or walking the Hawke's Bay Trails alongside Pūrimu Stream, may notice construction activity and equipment on site during this time.

The pump station will remain accessible throughout construction in case it's needed during severe weather.
