On 11 February 2026, we received updated health and safety advice regarding Nelson Quay Wharf. Based on this advice, we are required to take all reasonable steps to ensure public safety.

As a result, Nelson Quay Wharf is now fully closed to everyone, including vessel owners. Access is not permitted under any circumstances. Just one boat ramp and parking spaces nearer the street remain open.

What has changed?

Structural investigations completed in 2025 identified that the wharf is unstable and at risk of failure. At that time, access was restricted to authorised users only.

New health and safety advice means we are now required to restrict access to all persons, effective immediately.

There has been no change to the previously identified structural issues. What has changed is the health and safety advice and our obligation to act on it.

What are the risks?

Engineering assessments confirm there is a risk of structural failure. In the event of collapse, there is potential risk to life and property.

What happens next?

Public safety is our immediate priority.

We are working with engineers to assess options and determine next steps. No decisions have been made about the long-term future of Nelson Quay Wharf.

We will continue to provide updates here as more information becomes available.
