Napier is growing, and with that growth comes new challenges for our stormwater network. In Maraenui and Te Awa, more homes and developments mean more stormwater run-off. Our current system can’t keep up with these changes, especially as storms are becoming more frequent and intense.

Instead of upgrading the entire Plantation Drain system, which would be costly and disruptive, we plan to redirect some high-level stormwater flows south to Te Awa's Serpentine Pond, and then out to Hawke Bay.

Te Awa Pump Station and Outfall

A key part of this work is building a new pump station on Te Awa Estate Reserve, complete with a backup generator for reliability. This station will connect to a new coastal outfall pipe, which will carry treated stormwater safely to the sea.

We’ll also be enhancing Te Awa's Serpentine Pond to improve water quality, reduce odours, and make the area more welcoming for people and wildlife.

What this means for Napier
  • Stronger protection from flooding, keeping homes and businesses safer.
  • Support for housing and growth, enabling new developments.
  • Healthier, more resilient communities with cleaner, more reliable stormwater infrastructure.

This work is about building a stormwater network that works for our communities today and for generations to come.
