The traffic signals at the Meeanee Road and Guppy Road intersection in Taradale are being replaced with a roundabout.
A formal safety investigation found the existing signals needed to be addressed, and a roundabout is the recommended solution. Rather than wait for a permanent roundabout to be designed and funded, we are installing a temporary one first. That means safety improvements are in place quickly, and it gives you the chance to experience the new layout and have your say before any final decisions are made.
Your feedback matters. It will inform the design and timing of a permanent roundabout, which will be considered in Council's 2027–2037 Long Term Plan.
What is changing and why?
The existing traffic signals at the intersection of Meeanee Road and Guppy Road in Taradale are being replaced with a roundabout following a safety investigation. Changes to the road layout will include reducing the number of lanes feeding onto and off the roundabout and a raised pedestrian crossing on Meeanee Road (western approach) to provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians, especially school children as there are many school nearby.
The timing of this project also supports better traffic flow through this part of the network while NZTA Waka Kotahi's Hawke's Bay Expressway works are ongoing nearby.
Why is the roundabout temporary?
This is a trial and your feedback will directly shape the permanent solution for this intersection. Once it is installed, we want to hear from drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, residents and businesses as to how you think it is working. Everyone who uses this intersection has a view worth sharing.
Monitoring and feedback will begin 1 July 2026 and be open for eight weeks. Tell us:
- How is the roundabout working for you as a driver?
- Do you feel safer as a pedestrian or cyclist?
- Has your journey time or traffic flow changed?
- Is there anything about the layout that isn't working well?
- Any other comments about the intersection?
